Acne Treatment During Pregnancy Treating acne is really the right move when you have it, but not at all times. There are stages in the life of a person when you should not treat acne with common medications. One of these is during pregnancy.
As we know, this is a delicate stage in a woman?s life and it is that phase of a woman?s life that she must show extra care for herself. When she feels the need of treating acne, she must see to it that she equips her self with the right information.
This must also be remembered by those who may also get pregnant. The following are some medications for acne that are not good for use during pregnancy as they are harmful to the fetus:
First is Hormonal Therapy. This may include estrogen, flutamide, and spirolactone. They are a big no. They are harmful and may lead to some problems for both the mother and the child. Better see it as a threat.
Another one that would put a fetus in danger is Isotretinoin (an oral retinoid), contained in products such as Accutane and Roaccutane. These medications have known effects on a fetus, involving malformations. It is recommended that a woman stop using products with Isotretinoin at least a month before becoming pregnant. A related product that must be shunned by pregnant women is Tretinoin (Avita cream, Retin A).
Oral tetracyclines are also on our "do not use" list. This includes doxycycline, tetracycline, minocycline, and other derivatives. A prime negative effect is permanent discoloration of teeth, or other calcium related disorders.
You should also avoid topical retinoids, such as tazarotene, adapalene and tretinoin.
Although products containing Benzoyl Peroxide, Hydrocortisone, Salicylic Acid, Erythromycin, Clindamycin, and others have no known effect on a fetus, it is recommended by some that mothers-to-be discontinue medical treatment of acne during pregnancy. There is a time for treating your acne. During your pregnancy is not one of those times.
